Del Shannon, 60’s rock ‘n roll star, gained international fame when his song “Runaway” shot to the #1 position on the American music charts and in over 20 other countries in the spring of 1961. That song was written at the Hi-Lo Club which stood on the corner of Capital Avenue SW and E Hamblin Avenue, where a Del Shannon / Runaway Historic Marker currently stands.
Now, the Battle Creek Regional Museum will be dedicating an official exhibit of Shannon’s music memorabilia, gold records, stage attire, and personal photos that spanned his 30 years in rock music. Born Charles Westover, his first wife Shirley and son Craig will be in attendance for the ceremony. Also on hand will be Battle Creek local James Popenhagen, who will perform a few of Shannon’s big hits live, as well as archivist Brian Young, who is authoring the forthcoming biography on Shannon. A film documentary is currently in the works for the late singer, with a small film crew planning to attend.
Del’s other big hits included “Hats Off To Larry,” “Little Town Flirt,” “Handy Man,” “Do You Wanna Dance,” “Keep Searchin’,” and “Stranger In Town.” His last hit was “Sea of Love” in 1982, produced by Tom Petty for his critically acclaimed album “Drop Down and Get Me.” Shannon was the first American artist to record a Beatles tune with “From Me To You” in ’63. He also wrote Top Ten hits “I Go To Pieces” for Peter & Gordon, and “Cheap Love” for Juice Newton, and as a producer Top 5 hits “Baby It’s You” with a group called Smith and “Gypsy Woman” for Brian Hyland.
